""Managing your glucose levels is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your athletic performance. Without the proper glucose regulation a great workout or competition isn't possible."
About Me
I have strived for excellence all of my life. I am constantly seeking more knowledge and love learning new things. From learning how to ride and wrench on motocross bikes to learning the biochemistry of metabolism to learning what it takes for an athlete to summit Mt. Everest, I am always working to improve my knowledge.
I have been fortunate in many ways as I have led an incredible revolution in cycling training that completely changed the world of training for competitive cycling. I did not set out to "change the world" so to speak, I just merely got tired of responding to the same emails over and over, so decided writing the book with my good friend, Dr. Andrew R. Coggan, "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" would be an easier way to share my hard-won knowledge of training with a bicycle power meter. The principles of power training are now used by every cyclist in the world who wants to improve, which is both exciting and mind-boggling.
Writing used to be difficult for me, and I know my high school English teachers are still shocked to think that their "C—" student has now written four books, each of which has been wildly successful.
After writing hundreds of training articles for magazines, websites, blogs, I enjoy writing, and things flow much easier, although I still think of myself as an average writer. Maybe "C+" now. ;-)
I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have gained and helping others to achieve their goals. If something in this book will help you crush that workout, win that next competition, or just gain the edge on your friends on Saturday, that's all I have wished for it to accomplish.

Other interests
- Travel. I love traveling to new places. I have traveled to over 25 countries now. I hiked for 16-days to Everest base camp, ridden my mountain bike through the jungles of Costa Rica, drank ice water from a glacier in Iceland, raced across the entire country of Portugal in 8 days on mountain bike, eaten snacks on side of the "W" trek trail in Patagonia, ridden road bicycles in the insane traffic of Panama City, practiced Tai Chi with a master in Shanghai China, motorcycled on the sand dunes in Peru, raced the 15-day Tour of Venezuela stage race, drank Raki in Istanbul and boated up the Mekong river into Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City.
- Race Cars. I have raced cars on and off for 13 years and enjoy racing and wrenching on my 1990 Porsche 911. I have learned so much about cars, and it's fueled my passion for all things speedy. I even won the Porsche Club 2017 National Championship in my class.
- Motorcycles. Riding tight single-track trails on my Husqvarna te300i is an absolute blast. I am learning how to convert my mountain bike skills to throttle twisting.
- Yoga and Tai Chi. I taught both for over five years and still love to practice them. Yoga keeps my joints young and muscles supple, and Tai chi allows me to reconnect with the Qi.
- Music. Live music renews me. I strive to attend at least two live music shows a month. I have been to over 40 Grateful Dead concerts. Over 100, counting their most recent incarnations. Yes, I am old enough to have seen Jerry Garcia in person.
